The Living Watershed

hosted by

Opal Creek Ancient Forest Center

Learn about the incredible role that watershed ecosystems play in our daily lives and how forests nurture the waterways that provide our drinking water. Let us introduce you to the Opal Creek Wilderness, an intact old-growth forest that filters and refines the Little North Fork of the Santiam River, the source of Salem’s municipal drinking water.

We'll show you how you can estimate the health of an aquatic ecosystem without using any chemistry or equations. Learn to identify living macro-invertebrates (that’s a fancy word for insects) that live in unpolluted water bodies around Oregon. Finally, see a demonstration of how Opal Creek Ancient Forest Center harnesses the clear cold water of Flume Creek to create electricity for our off-grid community.
