Al has been a horticulturist in the Willamette Valley since 1980. He worked at Oregon State University for 10 years with their landscape maintenance operation. He then spent five years as the Ornamental Horticulturist at the Eugene Country Club, rated the number one golf course in Oregon at the time. In 1999 an opportunity arose to work at the fledgling Oregon Garden in Silverton beginning as Crew Supervisor and eventually becoming the Horticulture Manager.

He is presently employed by DeSantis Landscapes in Salem, the state’s first and only commercial landscape

Sustainable Practices for the Home Landscape

We will examine methods of constructing and maintaining landscapes without pesticides or synthetic fertilizers. We’ll examine the benefits of compost, compost tea, water harvesting and using native and regionally adapted plants for our Mediterranean climate.
